Jorina
Elbers

Neurologist specialized in chronic stress and trauma, who has helped to refine the definition of the clinical manifestations of nervous system dysfunction.

Dr. Elbers is a Canadian board-certified neurologist who specializes in the treatment of chronic stress and trauma. As an assistant professor and pediatric neurologist at Stanford, her research explored the health effects of adverse childhood experiences and helped define the clinical features of nervous system dysregulation.

Dr. Elbers now serves as Director of the Trauma Recovery Project at HeartMath, where she created their trauma-sensitive training program for health professionals, and their online program for parents teaching emotional awareness and self-regulation. Alongside her medical background, Jorina is trained in EMDR, Brainspotting, and HeartMath. She has a private neurology practice in Santa Cruz, working with adults and children who struggle with chronic, often unexplained, neurological symptoms.

Through her teaching, writing, and clinical work, Dr. Elbers offers a science-based and compassionate framework for understanding how the nervous system adapts to stress and trauma, and the pathways for healing.
