Transcending Trauma

Understanding and healing trauma through the IFS and Neuroscience

with Frank Anderson, a major figure of the IFS

12 modules – 8 hours 40 minutes of content

The IFS (Internal Family Systems or Inner Family System) is an innovative therapeutic model developed by Richard Schwartz, recognized for its effectiveness in treating trauma. Frank Anderson, a psychiatrist and close collaborator of Bessel van der Kolk, was one of the very first to be trained in IFS by Richard Schwartz, over 20 years ago. IFS quickly became central to his support.

  • How not to pathologize “trauma survivors”?
  • What does IFS bring to the treatment of trauma?
  • How can we, as therapists, avoid being overwhelmed by our own traumas?

Combining scientific rigor with human warmth, Frank Anderson shares his extensive knowledge, blending neuroscience with IFS, while questioning the therapeutic stance. A dense and rich program, punctuated with meditations, clinical videos, and experiential practices, to support all types of trauma, and more specifically complex trauma.

I have been working in the field of trauma since 1992 and have learned a lot about the different ways of working with all types of trauma.

Trauma happens to everyone. I believe we all go through life-changing experiences.

I don't think anyone is exempt from it, but the good news is that everyone can heal from trauma.

In this program, I put everything, absolutely everything! Everything I understood, everything I learned over my years of practice, but also from my personal experience.

I hope this program will give you hope, that it will allow you to have new perspectives, to see differently the methods of working with trauma that you have used throughout your career.

And I hope this helps you move things forward, because many of us carry a lot of energy about traumas that aren't our own. If we work together, we can help as many people as possible release trauma.

This will change the world we live in.

I would like to thank my family, especially my husband and children, and my patients from whom I have learned so much.

– Frank Anderson

Much more than a program: a complete immersion in IFS, trauma and neuroscience

This program is not just a theoretical course. It's a true educational journey, a distillation of more than 20 years of clinical practice and teaching by one of the biggest names in IFS therapy: Dr. Frank Anderson.

  • Have you already trained at IFS? Supplement your knowledge with new knowledge and clinical case studies.
  • Are you trained in trauma? Gain new insight with IFS, an essential therapeutic modality for trauma support.

A dense, rich, and profound program: the most comprehensive synthesis ever offered on IFS and trauma

Frank Anderson doesn't just convey a model. He deploys it in all its dimensions: clinical, neurobiological, relational, emotional, and even spiritual. With clarity and precision, he weaves bridges between neuroscience, attachment theory, nervous system responses, pharmacology, and the complexity of trauma.

Frank Anderson himself says: “I don't think I've ever put so much into a class."

What this program offers you:

  • Complete mastery of the IFS model, even if you are a beginner: the 6 steps of the protocol, the 6 “F”, the 8 qualities of the Self, polarizations, direct access, the therapist’s posture…
  • A dive into neuroscience from trauma : hyper and hypoactivated nervous systems, interoception, neuroplasticity, neurotransmitters, associated disorders…
  • A sharp clinical look at complex traumas : preverbal, relational, dissociative, intergenerational, cultural, addictions, bipolar or psychotic disorders.
  • Integration with other models : EMDR, AEDP, Somatic Experiencing, Polyvagal Theory, psychopharmacology, etc.
  • Rare and precious contributions : working with the therapist's parts, unloading process, healing shame, spiritual and symbolic dimensions of transformation.

From “telling and sharing” to “following and listening”: a challenge for many therapists

Older, traditional psychotherapy methods rely primarily on talking. Many patients are used to talking to their therapist and telling their story because they know (or think) that this is what is expected of them.

But as an IFS therapist, we don't expect the patient to tell us their story in detail and we accept that we are not "the one who knows." We welcome each story with curiosity and kindness, and we undertake, with our patient, a unique journey of inner discovery...

So it's a real paradigm shift for the patient, as well as for the therapist: to start "being with" the inner experience, because from a neuroscientific point of view and with the IFS understanding, it is inside that the dysregulation is found. In our "inner system" and in our nervous system, both central and autonomic.

For us to truly reunite this inner network, to heal our wounded parts, to transcend our traumas, we need to connect with the places where the dysregulation lies, with the parts that carry our wounds (what IFS calls burdens). This means changing the way we work: stopping talking and starting listening. And this is a challenge for many therapists.

What IFS brings to therapists

Trauma, in particular, causes an internal rupture of the attachment bonds between the Self and the parts. Before rushing to heal the wounds, we must first repair these bonds: it is this “inner re-attachment” that is the basis of this journey that allows us to care for and heal people who have experienced trauma. Trauma is, in essence, a violation of the relationship, both internal and external.

Let us recall the objectives of the IFS:

  • Healing the exiles by releasing the burdens they carry,
  • Freeing the protective parts from their extreme roles,
  • Restore the parties' trust in the leadership of the Self,
  • Help the parties reintegrate the system and reunify the system.

With IFS, we will heal and repair inner relationships, and increase the person's ability to manage their outer relationships.

But how can we identify and be attentive to our own parts when working with someone who is having an extreme, intense, or even overwhelming reaction? The more complex the trauma, the more complex the patients' reactions can be, and this resonates with our own internal systems. As therapists, we are not neutral. Our own parts become activated, sometimes violently: irritation, fear, helplessness, the need to control...

Knowing how to recognize, welcome, and validate these activated parts and the role they play in our lives allows us to create more inner space. This is one of the essential skills of the IFS therapist. Frank Anderson insists: we must learn to stay connected to our own system, to better support that of others. This is also what practicing from the Self means.

The greater the trauma, the more the parts block access to the Self.

Parts block what in IFS is called Self energy. When we get to know the parts, when they feel validated, when they calm down and withdraw, Self energy emerges. We work with the parts of patients that manifest to help them access Self energy. The patient's Self can then take leadership, connect with a wounded part, and, through certain well-defined steps in the IFS unloading protocol, help them heal and regain qualities essential to life and fulfillment.

In the case of trauma, this access to the Self and this healing protocol can be difficult. It is a long process. The greater the trauma, the more the parts block access to the Self. And often, the parts do not like the Self because the Self has abandoned them. It is this SELF-PARTIES relationship that we must try to repair.

“Is the relationship between the Self and the part important in healing?

Absolutely. 100%. But I also believe that the therapeutic relationship is equally important, not secondary. Personally, I think that trauma, whether relational or attachment, is the result of a breakdown in bonding and connection. I think healing requires relationship and connection, both internally and externally. I don't believe healing can happen when you're alone. I think healing can only happen within a relationship.

Frank Anderson.

Who is this program for?

  • To mental health professionals : psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, psychopractitioners, whether you are beginners or already familiar with the IFS model.
  • To people passionate about the IFS model, curious to deepen your understanding. But be careful, this program is not a therapy: it does not replace therapeutic support with a qualified professional. We recommend that you contact a professional if you experience difficulties.

Refine your therapeutic practice with IFS and learn to welcome your patients' parts without losing connection with your own.

What will I learn with this program?

  • Discover the fundamentals of IFS and understand how to integrate this powerful model into your clinical practice, step by step, even if you are new to this approach.
  • Bridging the gap between neuroscience and IFS to understand how the neurobiological bases of trauma illuminate the internal mechanisms of your patients.
  • Identify the different parts (protective parts and exiled parts), their roles in the psychic system and the protection strategies put in place following the traumatic event, often confused with symptoms or resistance.
  • Explore the notion of Self and how to access this stable, centered, caring inner space, a true engine of transformation for your patients... and for yourself.
  • Better understanding PTSD and dissociation in the light of neurobiology and why these responses are frequent and how they fit into a logic of survival.
  • Knowing when to offer compassion or resonance, and how to adapt your posture according to the needs of the different parts.
  • Addressing the treatment of relational trauma, often the origin of deep attachment wounds and knowing how to treat them while respecting the rhythm of the protective parts.
  • Working with the parties, namely how to meet them, establish an internal dialogue, help them feel seen, heard, respected.
  • Working with Protectors with respect and strategy and learn how not to rush these distrustful parts, which are often the keys to accessing deep wounds.
  • Bringing out the Self in session and strengthen his presence so that healing no longer comes from the therapist, but from within the patient.
  • Disamalgamate the parts, that is, helping patients to differentiate themselves from their injured or protective parts, to find more clarity and inner security.
  • Welcoming Your Own Parts as a Therapist : understand how they are activated in the therapeutic relationship, and how to stay centered, even in complex cases.
  • Integrate fundamental IFS concepts and protocols, the “6 F” for working with protectors, the “8C” (the qualities of the Self), the unloading protocol.
  • Restoring the parties' confidence in self-leadership, so that the patient can gradually become his own guide.

…and many other topics addressed by Frank Anderson with passion and relevance: pharmacology and drug treatments, psychedelic-assisted therapy (the pros and cons), gender trauma (with a focus on the LGBTQ+ community), the role of forgiveness, post-healing support…

As well as exercises, meditations and excerpts from IFS sessions with patients.

In this excerpt from Module 2, Frank Anderson looks back at Dick Schwartz's creation of the model and the goal of harmonious integration of the parts, which is not a search for "perfect unity," but a fluid and benevolent cohabitation between all the parts.
