Tara
Brach

Psychotherapist and meditation teacher, she trains psychotherapists to integrate mindfulness strategies.

Tara Brach earned dual degrees from Clark University in psychology and political science, while taking yoga classes and exploring Eastern approaches to inner transformation. After college, she lived for ten years in an ashram where she practiced and taught yoga and meditation. She went on to earn a doctorate in clinical psychology from the Fielding Institute and then trained at the Spirit Rock Meditation Center. The synthesis of her work as a psychotherapist and meditation teacher has led her to train psychotherapists in integrating mindfulness strategies into clinical practice.

In 1998, Tara founded the Insight Meditation Community of Washington (IMCW) where she gives lectures, classes, and workshops, and leads silent meditation retreats. She believes that emotional healing, relief from suffering, and spiritual awakening all come through loving mindfulness and compassion in action.

She and Jack Kornfield lead the Awareness Training Institute (ATI), which offers online courses on mindfulness and compassion, as well as a certification program for mindfulness meditation teachers (MMTCP). In addition to numerous articles and videos and hundreds of recorded lectures, Tara is the author of: Radical Acceptance: Embracing Your Life with the Heart of a Buddha (2003); Radical Self-Acceptance: A Buddhist Guide to Free Yourself from Shame (2013); and Radical Compassion: Learning to Love Yourself and Your World with the Practice of Rain (2019).
