Delphine
Bertholon

French novelist and screenwriter whose books focus on trauma and resilience.

Delphine Bertholon was born and raised in Lyon, just a stone’s throw from the Lumière brothers’ home. As soon as she learned to read, she devoured the 49 volumes of Fantômette and began writing short stories—an unlikely blend of Star Wars and Little House on the Prairie. From that moment on, she never stopped writing.

At eighteen, she entered the hypokhâgne preparatory class (for the leading French humanities grandes écoles), pushed herself all the way through to the khâgne, but—being too much of a dilettante to gain admission to the École Normale Supérieure—finished her degree in Modern Literature at Lyon III. Finally abandoning the idea of teaching, she moved to Paris to join friends who had gone there to try their luck as filmmakers. Working alongside them, she became a screenwriter while continuing her literary work. After numerous odd jobs, she finally joined the Lattès publishing house in 2007 with Cabine Commune, her first novel. This was followed by Twist, L’effet Larsen, Grâce, Le soleil à mes pieds, Les corps inutiles, and Cœur-Naufrage. She is also the author of two young adult novels, Ma vie en noir et blanc (Rageot/2016) and Celle qui marche la nuit (Albin Michel Jeunesse/2019). Some of her more recent books include Dahlia, published by Flammarion, as well as the young-adult novels Ce qui m’attend dans le noir (2023) and La Baronne perchée (2025), both published by Albin Michel Jeunesse.
