Refugee, poet, musician, and refugee rights advocate, born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which he was forced to flee in 2008.
Trésor Nzengu Mpauni, better known as Menes la Plume, is a refugee, poet, musician, and refugee rights advocate, born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
In 2008, he was forced to flee the DRC and settled in Malawi, where he currently lives in the Dzaleka refugee camp. Menes is the founder of Tumaini Letu, a nonprofit organization that promotes the social, cultural, and economic inclusion of refugees in Malawi. Its flagship program is the annual Tumaini Festival, which is the world’s first international music and arts festival to take place in a refugee camp.
Menes la Plume is the recipient of the 2020 Sharjah International Award for the Defense and Support of Refugees and the World Bank’s 2018 Social Inclusion Hero Award for the Africa region. He also co-hosted the 2019 Global Refugee Forum 2019 and was a finalist for the 2020 Ockenden International Awards and the 2021 Global Pluralism Award.
