Dr Gabor Maté is a physician who retired after 20 years of general practice and palliative care experience, and subsequently worked for over ten years in a high-need neighborhood of Vancouver (Downtown East Side) with patients suffering from substance use disorders and mental health conditions.
A best-selling author of several books published in 25 languages, Gabor is an internationally renowned speaker in high demand for his expertise in addiction, trauma, child development, and the relationship between stress and illness. His book on addiction won the Hubert Evans Award for literary nonfiction. For his medical work and groundbreaking writings, he was awarded the Order of Canada, his country’s highest civilian honor, and the Civic Merit Award from his hometown of Vancouver.
