Dharma teacher, author, certified yoga teacher.

Kaira Jewel Lingo grew up in a multiracial family in Chicago and later in Nairobi. From a young age, she felt connected to people from other countries and knew that her purpose in life was to serve, alleviate suffering, and bring joy to others. After earning her Master’s degree in social sciences from Stanford University, she served as a nun for 15 years in Thich Nhat Hanh’s Order of Interbeing. Today she is a lay Dharma teacher based in Washington, D.C. She leads retreats and teaches Buddhist meditation, mindfulness, and compassion internationally, particularly to activists, people of color, artists, educators, families, and young people.

Kaira Jewel edited Thich Nhat Hanh’s book, Planting Seeds: Practicing Mindfulness with Children, and authored We Were Made for These Times: Skilfully Moving through Change, Loss and Disruption. She helped create and develop the Wake Up Schools, bringing mindfulness to education. She currently teaches educators through the Mindful Schools certification program. She explores the intersection of art, play, ecology, and spiritual practice and is a certified yoga teacher and an InterPlay leader.

Kaira Jewel has supported BIPOC retreats and the development of BIPOC sanghas. She edited and contributed to Together We are One, teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh and BIPOC practitioners.
