Psychologist and psychotherapist certified in EMDR, specializing in the treatment of complex trauma and racial trauma.
Niloufer Merchant, PhD, is Professor Emerita at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, where she taught Clinical Psychology for 28 years. She currently practices as a clinical psychologist in private practice in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she specializes in the treatment of complex trauma, particularly trauma related to racial and cultural issues.
Niloufer is certified in EMDR and trained in other mind-body and mindfulness-based approaches. She has published numerous articles on intercultural psychotherapy, cultural specificities, and group work. She has also held numerous leadership positions in local and national administration.
Throughout her career, Niloufer has advocated for the creation of safe spaces for people of color in schools, universities, and communities, promoting anti-racism and systemic change. More recently, she has focused on applying Polyvagal Theory (PVT) to the treatment of racial trauma. In a TEDx talk, she outlined its principles, demonstrating the connection between PVT and the ancestral wisdom of cultural practices.
