Psychotherapist and pioneer in drama therapy who has made significant contributions to improving the mental health sector in Sri Lanka.

 

Ravindra Ranasinha, PhD, is a psychotherapist and pioneer in drama therapy who has made significant contributions to mental health in Sri Lanka. He is the author of Creative Arts Therapies for Autistic Children and has published several scientific studies on learning disabilities. His doctoral thesis focused on adults with Down’s syndrome, and he developed the ‘Mirror Learning Approach,’ a theory using drama therapy to improve mirror neuron function in individuals with developmental disorders, which he applied in a 2018 study with 100 children at SERRIC, the Sri Lankan Army’s school for individuals with special needs.

Ravindra serves as a resource person for the WHO, the ILO, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Education, and the Sri Lankan Armed Forces. He is director of the Center for Dramatherapy Research in Sri Lanka and a founding member of the World Alliance of Dramatherapy at New York University. He also led the psychosocial intervention in Katuwapitiya following the Easter Sunday attacks, and his role as a mental health service provider is recognized by numerous organizations in Sri Lanka.
